add external links using ChatGPT
Reading Time: 5 minutes
External blog post links play a pivotal role in strengthening your website's online presence. When used effectively, these links can greatly enhance your site's authority.
Here are a few reasons why you need them in your blog:
- Linking to high-quality, authoritative sites tells both readers and search engines that you've done your research and are providing reliable information.
- External links can boost your search engine ranking. This means more searchers can view your content.
- Links from high-domain authority sites can help readers access additional valuable content. This encourages them to stay longer on your page.
However, the process isn't as straightforward as it seems. If you've ever worked through an extensive list of blog pages, you'll know the challenge.
Finding the right anchor texts to attach to those links is a task in itself. It requires attention to detail and can take up a lot of your time.
Thankfully, ChatGPT has advanced capabilities to integrate links to your content seamlessly.
If you’re eager to learn how, then read on. I’ll show you how easy it is to automate the process using ChatGPT. By the end of this tutorial, you'll have a streamlined approach to bolstering your site's authority with well-chosen outbound links.

How to Find the Best External Links With ChatGPT
1) Prepare Your Content for External Linking
For our purposes, I’ve prepared an article titled ‘How to Find Low Competition Keywords for Blog Articles.’

Later in this guide, we'll input this into ChatGPT and let the AI tool add the external links.
Tip: If your article is already live, there's no need to copy the entire content. Simply provide the URL, and ChatGPT can work with that too.
2) Prepare a List of Potential External Links
Start by gathering external links that you believe would enhance your article. You can use tools like Moz, Ahref, or SEMrush to find authoritative websites in your niche. Just make sure to prioritize links from reputable sources to maintain your article’s integrity.
For example, if your article mentions data-driven information or facts, you can link them to the original sources like Google Scholar, ResearchGate, or other reputable journals. Niche-specific forums are also great sources to find authoritative articles.
Lastly, you can use ChatGPT to get suggestions for external links. But remember, it's not always perfect. In my experience, the AI can sometimes give you fake or non-existent links.
If you prefer this method, always double-check to make sure the links are reliable and working. You can add to your ChatGPT prompt something like ‘Make sure the links are real and working. Don't hallucinate or make them up.’
In this guide, I’ve gathered the following external links to add to my article:
- https://sproutsocial.com/insights/new-social-media-demographics/

3) Write a ChatGPT Prompt to Insert External Links
ChatGPT can analyze your content and help you find the relevant anchor texts to add your external links. All you need to do is enter a clear and concise prompt.
Here’s how I’ve written my prompt (feel free to use or modify it to meet your needs):
Add external links to the article wherever you see fit based on the sources I gave you.
Here are the external links:
[paste the external links here]
Here is my written content:
[paste the written article or the URL of the blog here]
Once you’ve entered the prompt, ChatGPT will then start integrating the external links where they fit best in your content.

4) Double-Check the Results
ChatGPT is not perfect, so make sure that the links are added to the right places. Check the anchor texts used and change them if needed.

In this tutorial, ChatGPT used these anchor texts for my links:
- SEO or search engine optimization
- Google Keyword Planner
- set up an on-site search tracking in your Google Analytics account
- Social media demographics and insights
- check your competitor’s websites to see the keywords they are using
Tips When Adding External Blog Post Links
Adding high-quality external links to boost your SEO is a strategic process. They serve as bridges to connect your readers to other authoritative sources.
Here are a few tips to make your external links more effective:
- Explore other similar articles and check their references. This approach might help you find other authoritative sites that you’ve missed.
- I find that quality always wins over quantity. So, don't overdo it. Ensure that every link adds value to your readers and is contextually relevant.
- Your anchor texts must appear natural and should not be overly optimized for specific keywords. Otherwise, this can hurt your site’s ranking.
- Over time, some links might become broken, or the content they lead to might become outdated. So check and update your external links regularly to ensure they're up-to-date and relevant.
And that's it!
With ChatGPT, adding external links to your blog becomes more efficient. It speeds up the process, freeing up your time for other important tasks. It works VERY well too!
