As you browse a website, you may occasionally stumble across a web page that doesn't exist. When this happens, you'll see a 404 error message. This is the web server's way of telling you that the page you're looking for can't be found. While most 404 pages are pretty boring, you can actually create a custom 404 page in Oxygen Builder that is both informative and visually appealing with little to no effort!

What's a 404 page?

The 404 error message is a response code from a web server that indicates that the requested page or document could not be found. This error message dates back to the early days of the internet, when it was used to indicate that a file or directory did exist. Today, the 404 error message is still commonly used to indicate that a page has been deleted or moved.

Do I need a 404 page?

A 404 page is not required by law, but it is generally a good idea to have one. If you don't have a 404 page and someone tries to access a page that doesn't exist, they will see a generic error message from your web server. A custom 404 page can be used to provide useful information to your website's visitors, such as links to other pages on your site or contact information in case they need help finding what they're looking for.

Creating a custom 404 page in Oxygen Builder is easy, and there are a few different ways you can do it. You can easily create your own custom template or use a third-party plugin, in this tutorial we will focus on using a custom template.

What information goes on a 404 page?

A 404 page should generally include the following information:

-Your website's name or logo

-A brief message explaining what happened

-Links to other pages on your website

-Website administration contact information

Additionally, make sure your 404 page is visually appealing and easy to navigate. In addition to informing users that the page they were looking for could not be found, include links to other popular pages on your website. Keep your 404 page simple and concise, and avoid including too much information or graphics.

Step 3: Open the Oxygen editor and select the "add element" button. At minimum, you should add a heading and some text. You can also add additional elements like images, buttons, and social media icons. We added a header, explanation text, and a button allowing users to return to the homepage.
