OpenAI Just Fired Sam Altman, Appoints New Interim CEO

In a surprising twist, OpenAI has just announced that Sam Altman is stepping down as CEO and giving up his seat on the board of directors. In the meantime, Mira Murati, OpenAI's chief technology officer, will be taking on the role of interim CEO immediately.

This unexpected change in leadership follows what claims to be an "in-depth review process" conducted by the board of directors, which concluded that Sam Altman's communications with the board lacked the consistency and don't seem viable for effective leadership.

This assessment degraded the board's confidence in his ability to continue guiding OpenAI.

In a statement issued by the board of directors, they reiterate their mission that artificial general intelligence benefits humanity as a whole. While expressing gratitude for Sam Altman's contributions, the board emphasized the need for fresh leadership as they move forward.

As part of this, Greg Brockman will step down as chairman of the board but will still remain actively involved in the company.

OpenAI's board of directors boasts prominent figures from the tech and AI sectors, including OpenAI's chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, independent directors Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, technology entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology’s Helen Toner.

OpenAI, originally established as a non-profit organization in 2015, has undergone structural changes to allow raising of capital while preserving its non-profit status. A majority of the board comprises independent directors without equity stakes in the company.

Seemingly random news to be announced less than 3 days after Altman's last tweet. It doesn't seem like Altman showed any signs of leaving the company.
