How To Use DALL-E 3 Directly Inside ChatGPT

Nuance and creativity aren't the only thing that DALL-E 3 has over its competitors. Thanks to ChatGPT integration, DALL-E 3 is way more accessible than having to go through Discord to use tools like Midjourney. Here's how to use DALL-E 3 without ever leaving ChatGPT.

DALL-E 3 was just released last month and with it came a promise: more creative outputs and better context understanding.

The text one really got to me. Logos? Sign me up. Combine that with the interface and discussion of ChatGPT and Midjourney has got themselves a serious competitor.

The thing I wanted to investigate into the most is how well it works with GPT-4.

So, today, let’s make that happen. Here’s everything you need to know about how to access DALL-E in ChatGPT and how to use it.

What is DALL-E 3?

DALL-E 3 is the third version of OpenAI’s popular image generator. It’s a significant step-up from its previous iteration, and improves upon its creativity and nuance. You can access this model using ChatGPT (stay tuned for detailed instructions!) or Bing Create.

Accessing DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT

For most, it’s really simple to access DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT. For some, it’s impossible. I’ll get to that later but, for now, let’s start with the most important step: getting a subscription.

Just like GPT-4, you can’t use DALL-E 3 for free. Instead, you need to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 per month. It doesn’t only come with DALL-E 3 and GPT-4, it’s also bundled with new features such as advanced data analytics, web scraping with Bing, and plugins such as Zapier for automation and Wolfram for mathematics.

But I’m getting off-track. Once you’re subscribed, all that’s left to do is open ChatGPT and hover over the GPT-4 button on the upper middle part of your screen. From there, you should be able to select DALL-E 3.

GPT-4 Suboptions

Remember what I said earlier about DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT being impossible for some? If you hover your mouse and you don’t see DALL-E 3, then you have no other option but to wait. OpenAI is slowly rolling out new GPT-4 features, which means you won’t have access to DALL-E for a while.

How To Use DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT?

So, you know how to access it — but do you know how to use it?

One thing I really dislike about AI image generators is how unintuitive they are. Take this Midjourney prompt for example:

Midjourney Prompt Sample

Notice how complicated it is? Sure, it’s more flexible that way but it’s not really user-friendly. That’s the nature of most AI image generators. However, DALL-E 3 is different.

ChatGPT is conversational, and so is DALL-E 3. Unlike Midjourney, you don’t talk to it like you’re putting inputs on a robot. You just need to tell DALL-E 3 what you need. For example:

DALL-E 3 Test 1

It’s much, much simpler, right? This only works thanks to GPT-4. It takes your casual prompt and turns it into a language that DALL-E can understand. You can actually see what the tweaked prompt looks like when you press any of the four generated photos. Here’s an example:

From there, you can go ahead and ask DALL-E for further modification. For instance, let’s add a cat to the picture.

DALL-E 3 Test 2

What if you change your mind? Images are quite difficult to edit once they’re processed on other AI image generators, but DALL-E 3 stays true to its promise of better nuance. You can see it in action here:

DALL-E 3 Test 3

OpenAI truly outdid themselves in this new version of DALL-E 3. Not only does it create more creative art and understand context better, they also somehow managed to make it more accessible to everyone — even those without prompt engineering experience.

5 Ways You Can Use DALL-E & ChatGPT In Your Workflow

DALL-E 3 isn’t just for enthusiasts, it’s also an invaluable tool in the workplace. Here are some applications of this powerful AI image generator with ChatGPT in your workflow:

Creating Logos

Having trouble coming up with a logo for your business? Let DALL-E 3 and ChatGPT do the work. First, ask ChatGPT how to make a good logo. This helps provide an internal checklist for DALL-E when creating one. You can also skip this part if you want, but I found that I’ve been getting waaaay better results with this.

Now, simply ask ChatGPT to make the logos for you. None of those complicated parameters and what-nots in Midjourney, just talk to ChatGPT as if you’re talking to a person.

There you have it: four beautifully designed logos. However, do you notice that some of the text is misspelled or misaligned? This is because AI image generators don’t register text like we do. Instead, they think of letters as polygons, something that’s used in design only and not for reading.

That’s why it’s always best to edit the images after DALL-E 3 generates them.

Once you pick which one you like best, you can either download it or ask ChatGPT to generate variations of it in case you want to see more options.

Product Inspirations

You can also say goodbye to mental blocks with DALL-E 3. Now, it’s easy to get product mockups for your e-commerce business.

Generating Design Assets

Need help populating your website with content? You can use DALL-E 3 and ChatGPT together to create beautiful digital assets that are free to use.

For example, here are some flat vector illustrations for a dental website hero section:

Social Media

With studies suggesting that this generation has a shorter attention span, standing out in social media is more important than ever. It’s a challenge to stop someone when they’re scrolling — but you can make that easier with DALL-E 3. From pubmats to infographics, it’s a great way to create captivating content.

Social Media

Look at this combo of ChatGPT and DALL-E 3 here. I used ChatGPT to create the post contents and I had DALL-E 3 turn it into an infographic. This is just one of the many things you can do with these tools for social media.

Storyboarding

If you’re working in the film industry, you can also create beautiful storyboards for your next movie with DALL-E 3. Why go through the long process of drawing complicated sketches when you can just ask the AI image generator to do it for you?

Storyboarding

All it takes is an accurate description. Don’t worry about long prompts; DALL-E 3 is the most advanced image generator when it comes to context understanding today. You can check out our side-by-side-by-side comparison of DALL-E, Firefly, and Midjourney here for more details.

So, What Now?

I’m going to make a bold statement and say that DALL-E is the future of AI image generation — and this current iteration is already nothing short of amazing. Using it with ChatGPT makes it a hundred times better because it eliminates the complexity of prompts through GPT-4.

With more and more people using ChatGPT by the minute, it’s hard to imagine that there wouldn’t be a sudden influx of new DALL-E 3 users when it’s finally made public. And I can’t wait for the amazing artwork that’s born from this partnership.

Hi, I'm Angelo. I'm currently an undergraduate student studying Software Engineering. Now, you might be wondering, what is a computer science student doing writing for Gold Penguin? I took up studying computer science because it was practical and because I was good at it. But, if I had the chance, I'd be writing for a career. Building worlds and adjectivizing nouns for no other reason other than they sound good. And that's why I'm here.
