Is content writing still relevant in the age of social media and other marketing methods? Or is it soon to be obsolete due to market saturation and a shifting industry focus?

As we approach the final few weeks of the year, it’s time to start thinking about your content strategy for 2023. And one of the big questions on everyone’s mind is: is content writing still relevant? I've been seeing tons of posts throughout SEO Twitter (which is mostly filled with fraudsters & fake SEO gurus) discussing the idea that SEO content writing or blogging is no longer relevant and will soon be obsolete. Members of the community have claimed market saturation, the fall of Google, and the advancement of other marketing methods as reasons why content writing is no longer a viable option for businesses.
But I’m here to tell you that content writing is not only still relevant, but it’s more important than ever before. In fact, given the current state of the internet, now is the perfect time to start producing high-quality content.
Should You Still Write Blogs for SEO?
Google is constantly working to remove low-quality content from its search results. We've seen Google start cracking down on sites that feature thin or poor-quality content. As a result, sites that produce quality media are more likely to rank higher in search results. In under 2 months, Google has released the helpful content update, core update, and spam update. These all point to one thing: Google is getting better at detecting low-quality content and is making an effort to remove it from search results.
Online users are becoming more savvy and discerning when it comes to the content they consume. With so much information available at our fingertips, we've become more selective about the sources we trust. As a result, sites that produce quality content are more likely to build trust and credibility with their audience.
Think about it from your perspective. When you search anything in Google, how long do you stay on pages that are filled with garbage? Not long, right? You quickly move on to the next result until you find something that actually answers your question. The same is true for your potential customers and clients. If they can't find quality content on your site, they'll simply go to someone else who can provide it.
With the recent introduction of extremely impressive tools like ChatGPT, some also wonder if the SEO game is changed forever? Is content going to be replaced by robots? The short answer is no, and the long answer is not really. Again, the algorithms by Google are only going to get better at detecting fluff and garbage content – with more people padding the web it will probably make it even easier. There's a few public ways of detecting if content was written with AI and Google must have something 100x better than this. The current state of AI will change nothing but optimize the workflow of the best SEO's and filter the worst SEO's to the bottom of search engines.
Our agency used to use tools like SurferSEO and other similar services that analyze average word counts, headlines, images, and more for blogs that are ranking at the top of SERPs. After tons of speculation and research, we honestly don't believe these tools work. You could try to analyze word counts for hours and come up with the "perfect" blog post, but it honestly wouldn't make a difference. Good writing isn't based on numbers, it's based on letters.

You could try to mimic these successful averages in future articles that you write, but it's more important to focus on writing quality content that appeals to your target audience. Write what you know and what you're passionate about that will answer a question (to either inform your audience or entertain them). I would put money on the fact that if you produce quality content, Google will recognize it and reward you for it – as opposed to trying to figure out how many times you need to use the proper keyword on one of your pages. Don't aim for a specific word count, just answer the question you've proposed in your title and be thorough.
We've been producing content for our blog and dozens of other sites for years now, and I can tell you firsthand that keyword stuffing is an incredibly effective way to reach new customers and grow your business. You can't cheat the system. You have to produce quality, original content that is helpful and informative if you want it to be successful.
My prediction is within the next 2 years, SERPs will have almost entirely removed all the BS and only feature high-quality, informative articles & videos. Websites that have gotten away with cranking out low-quality content for years will no longer be able to rank. So if you're not producing quality content now, you're going to fall behind fast.
Conclusion
The bottom line is this: if you want your site to succeed, you need to produce quality content. It's as simple as that. There's no shortcut or easy way around it. So if you're not a content writer, now is the time to start! Hire a freelance writer, or start cranking out articles yourself. But whatever you do, don't neglect your content strategy heading into the new year. It's more important than ever before!
Take advantage of the lack of effort your competitors have used for years to finally outrank them. I'm not saying to compete with Forbes, Huffington Post, or other sites with a team of writers – but you can outrank smaller businesses in your industry that have been neglecting their blog. It's time to take content seriously, and I believe the new year will be a turning point for those who have been operating without a strategy.
Head into the new year with full confidence, knowing that you have a content strategy in place that will help your business succeed! If you need help getting started, or don't have the time to produce quality content yourself, reach out to us. We're a content agency that specializes in producing high-quality articles, videos, and more for our clients. We'd be happy to help you get started!
