Most "app development company" lists mix three very different businesses: big-brand agencies that build loyalty apps for hotel chains, Flutter specialists that ship one codebase to every platform, and senior studios that design and build an app and then keep running it. Pick the wrong kind and you either pay for an enterprise program you don't need or end up with a team that disappears after launch.
We compared eight mobile app development companies from their own sites and portfolios, plus Clutch profiles where we could load them, all checked in October 2026. Our pick is Digital Mundo, a senior, design-led studio that designs and builds native iPhone apps and web apps, then runs them under the client's own accounts.
Here's the TLDR (checked in October 2026):
- Digital Mundo (our pick): Best for companies and founders that want a carefully designed native iPhone app plus the web app behind it, from one senior team that builds both and keeps running them. Prices not published.
- Fueled: Best for big brands that want award-level consumer apps. Clutch lists a $75,000+ minimum.
- Very Good Ventures: Best for one Flutter codebase across iOS, Android and web. Clutch lists a $100,000+ minimum.
- TELUS Digital (formerly WillowTree): Best for enterprises that want mobile work inside a large services company. Not published.
- Bottle Rocket: Best for restaurant, retail and loyalty apps at national scale. Not published.
- Netguru: Best for commerce apps built by a large European team. Clutch lists a $50,000+ minimum.
- hedgehog lab: Best for UK and European fintech and regulated apps. Clutch lists a $100,000+ minimum.
- Dogtown Media: Best for healthcare and HIPAA-focused apps. Budget bands from $25,000.

1. Digital Mundo (our pick)
Digital Mundo is a US design and development studio in Miami and New York. Its app and product development page sums up the offer: "Web and iPhone apps, designed, built, launched and improved by one team." It designs most products itself, from the first screens to the App Store listing, and is just as happy building from your designers' files. It also handles App Store releases, payments, hosting and monitoring, set up under your company's accounts. Its about page says every release is tested, and you talk directly to the people building the app.
The iPhone proof is on the App Store. Yapper, the studio's own free dictation app, is a keyboard that types what you say in any app, transcribed on the phone with Apple's on-device speech model or NVIDIA's Parakeet, with no account and no tracking, and its code is open source. Its portfolio also lists Mercy Health's EMS protocols app for fire and EMS crews, on the App Store since 2023, and Speech Therapy Magic, games, stories and pronunciation practice with more than 9,000 practice words for speech therapists and families.
Its product page says a first version in customers' hands often takes about a month, depending on scope, and the same team keeps hosting, fixing and improving the app afterwards. The studio says it often builds with Next.js, Laravel and Swift, so the web app, admin panel and API behind the phone app come from the same people. See its portfolio of apps it still runs.
Pricing: not published. It works on an ongoing arrangement, a fixed price for a defined project, or, for a creator or expert with an audience, a share of what the product earns.
Limits: it builds native iPhone apps; Android isn't something it advertises, so ask if you need both stores at launch. It's a senior team rather than a large agency, so pick a bigger firm if you're staffing a large program. Much of its client work is under NDA, so there are few public case studies, and we found no third-party reviews. It publishes no prices and no compliance certifications such as SOC 2.
Pick it if: you want an iPhone app and its web backend from one team that stays after launch, with every account in your name.
2. Fueled
Fueled, founded in 2007, merged with the WordPress agency 10up in 2023 and now reports "300+ experts worldwide," fully remote. It still sells "award winning, chart topping iOS and iPadOS apps," and its work page backs that up: Warby Parker's AR virtual try-on (which it says won Apple's App of the Year), the CLEAR app "used by 33 million people," and apps for MGM Resorts and Ikon Pass. It also has a Flutter practice.
Pricing: not published. Its Clutch profile lists a $75,000+ minimum and $150 to $199 per hour, with 4.9 from 38 reviews (October 2026).
Limits: the client list is big-brand and enterprise, and since the merger it's as much a web and WordPress agency as an app studio.
Pick it if: you're a consumer brand with a real budget and the app is the product.
3. Very Good Ventures
Very Good Ventures is the Flutter specialist. Its team "launched the very first commercial Flutter app," the Hamilton musical app, in 2018, and it calls itself "Google's top-recommended Flutter firm." Its success stories include MarketWatch's stock market game, Betterment, Universal's park apps and Scooter's Coffee, whose native apps it moved to Flutter. It reports "120+" team members, fully remote.
Pricing: not published. Its Clutch profile lists a $100,000+ minimum and $150 to $199 per hour, with 5.0 from 35 reviews (October 2026).
Limits: it's Flutter first, so confirm the team if you want pure native Swift. The minimum puts it out of reach for a small first version.
Pick it if: you need iOS, Android and web from one codebase and have an enterprise budget.
4. TELUS Digital (formerly WillowTree)
WillowTree was one of the best-known US app agencies, and its site now redirects with the line "WillowTree is now TELUS Digital." The mobile and web development page builds for iOS, Android and cross-platform frameworks and cites "over 700 successful projects delivered since the launch of the iPhone." Published results include 19.2 million loyalty accounts for Dairy Queen and four times the bookings for Brightline.
Pricing: not published. Engagements are "custom teams, ready-to-go teams, and on-call specialists."
Limits: it's no longer an independent studio. TELUS Digital also sells contact center outsourcing and CX management, and the work is enterprise only.
Pick it if: you're a large brand that wants app work, AI and customer operations from one vendor.
5. Bottle Rocket
Bottle Rocket, in Addison, Texas, says it was founded "months before the App Store debuted" and is now "part of WPP Enterprise Solutions." Its work is national-brand ordering and loyalty: Outback Steakhouse, 7-Eleven, Caesars, Coca-Cola Freestyle and Baylor Scott & White. It builds native, cross-platform and low-code apps and has delivery centers in Latin America.
Pricing: not published; its contact form opens with "RFP / RFI Inquiries."
Limits: a holding-company unit with enterprise focus, now leaning toward modernization, cloud and data.
Pick it if: you run a restaurant or retail brand and the app drives loyalty and ordering.
6. Netguru
Netguru, which we also covered among the best custom software development companies, builds native Swift and Kotlin apps as well as React Native and Flutter, and its client page includes Delivery Hero's core apps and Booksy. It's based in PoznaĆ, Poland, with "400+ people on board" (self-reported). Clutch lists a $50,000+ minimum and $50 to $99 per hour. The limit is time zones and a pitch that now centers on commerce.
7. hedgehog lab
hedgehog lab is a UK B Corp headquartered in Newcastle, with hubs in Leeds, Edinburgh, London and Sofia, and a "twenty years track record shipping products into regulated industries." Its work page shows iOS and Android apps for AJ Bell's Dodl, Deliveroo, GoCity and RBS. Prices aren't published; Clutch lists a $100,000+ minimum and 4.8 from 82 reviews (October 2026). It has no US office, so US teams work across the Atlantic.
8. Dogtown Media
Dogtown Media, founded in 2011 in Venice Beach, California, says it has built "over 200 apps" and focuses on healthcare, AI, fintech and IoT, including HIPAA-compliant and remote patient monitoring apps. Its contact form starts its budget bands at $25,000 to $75,000. Its site gives little verifiable detail: no team size and no stack named.
How to choose
- Native, Flutter or both. Native Swift gives the best iPhone feel and access to new iOS features first. Flutter (Very Good Ventures, Fueled) saves money when Android matters at launch.
- Don't forget the backend. Most apps need accounts, payments, an admin panel and an API. Ask whether the same team builds and hosts those.
- Match minimums to budget. Four firms here list $50,000 to $100,000+ minimums on Clutch. A focused first version can cost far less with a small studio.
- Ask about year two. iOS changes every September. Find out who updates the app, and at what cost, after launch.
- Consider the alternatives. Digital Mundo's six ways to get software built compares AI builders, freelancers, agencies and in-house hiring.
FAQ
How much does a mobile app development company charge?
Clutch says most app projects reviewed on its site fall between $10,000 and $49,999, with an average of $90,780 (September 2026). Published agency ranges for a first iPhone app run about $45,000 to $130,000, and Clutch lists hourly rates of $150 to $199 for several US agencies here.
Should I build for iOS or Android first?
Build for wherever your customers are. Ask your current users which phones they carry; many teams launch on one platform, then add the other once the product works. If both matter on day one, a Flutter team is worth a look.
How long does it take to build an app?
A focused first version can be in customers' hands in weeks with a small team. Clutch reports a typical timeline of about 11 months for the projects reviewed on its site, which includes larger builds.
Can I build an app myself with AI?
For a prototype, often yes; we once built an iPhone quiz app with ChatGPT. Once real users, payments and data arrive, most teams need engineers to make it reliable.
Who should own the App Store account?
Your company. The developer account, code repository, hosting and payment accounts should all be in your name, so you can change vendors without rebuilding.
Shortlist two or three, show each the one screen your customers will use every day, and ask how they'd ship it in the first month.
