SEO content teams have a new problem that no one really talks about openly.

The workflow is efficient now. Generate a draft with AI, run it through Surfer to optimize for keywords and structure, publish. Rinse and repeat. It works, and the output is good enough that most readers can't tell the difference.

But Google's spam filters can. And so can AI detectors. So the question content teams are actually sitting with is, do you humanize before you publish, and if so, what do you use?

Surfer SEO has an answer for that. They added an AI humanizer to their platform, which makes a certain kind of sense. You're already in Surfer optimizing the piece. Why switch tools?

Undetectable AI has a different answer. They've been building humanizers since 2023 and nothing else, which also makes a certain kind of sense. Specialization tends to win.

We ran six AI-generated samples through both, one from ChatGPT, one from Gemini, one from Claude, two each, then scored every output through TruthScan. Here's what the numbers show.

What is Undetectable AI?

Undetectable AI is one of the longest-standing names in the AI humanization space, founded in 2023 and built from the ground up around one job: taking AI-generated text and rewriting it in a way that reads as human and passes AI detectors.

The tool supports output from all the major models. Before you hit humanize, you get a set of controls that most tools don't offer.

You pick a writing mode (Marketing, Essay, Story, Business, or General Writing) The idea is that the rewrite gets calibrated to how the final output actually needs to sound, not just processed through a one-size-fits-all algorithm.

Beyond the humanizer, Undetectable AI has grown into a full content suite. The platform includes an AI detector that scans text and images across multiple detection tools simultaneously, a Human Typer that mimics how a person types into documents, an AI Voice Detector, a Paraphrasing Tool, and an SEO Content Writer, all under one roof.

Pricing

  • Free plan: Basic humanization model, no signup required
  • Monthly plan: $19/month for 20,000 words
  • Annual plan: $9.99/month (billed at $114/year) for 20,000 words
  • Business plan: Custom pricing with bulk credits, non-expiring words, and priority support
  • All paid plans include API access, AI detection bypass, and unlimited AI detection scans

On the free plan, you get access to the basic humanization model, which is functional but not the most capable version.

The "Undetectable" model, the one built to score as human across advanced detectors, requires a paid plan.

What is Surfer SEO's AI Humanizer?

Surfer SEO is primarily an SEO content optimization platform used by content teams and agencies to research, write, and optimize articles for search rankings.

The AI humanizer was added in late 2024 as part of a broader "Surfer AI" writing suite. It is not a standalone product. It exists as a post-generation step inside Surfer AI's article editor, designed to reduce detectable AI patterns in content drafted through Surfer's own AI writer.

Pricing

  • Free trial: 500 words per run.
  • Standard: $99/month (billed yearly), includes 360 documents, AI visibility tracking, 25 AI prompts refreshed weekly, plagiarism check, and rank drop detection
  • Pro: $182/month (billed yearly), everything in Standard plus 50 AI prompts refreshed daily, 5 brand spaces, internal linking, content ideas, templates, and custom voices
  • Peace of Mind: $299/month (billed yearly), everything in Pro plus unlimited documents, 100 AI prompts refreshed daily, unlimited brand spaces, API access, and a dedicated customer success manager

The tool does have a public-facing free version, which is what we tested. It supports English only, with more languages listed as coming soon.

A Quick Note on Privacy

Both tools process your submitted text through their servers, so avoid running anything sensitive, confidential, or personally identifiable through either platform.

Undetectable AI states explicitly that submitted content is not stored or used for model training, and that all data is protected with advanced encryption.

Surfer SEO does not provide explicit documentation on the humanizer page about data retention or training practices for the free tool.

If data handling is a concern for your workflow, check Surfer's general privacy policy before submitting proprietary content.

The Test Setup

We kept the test simple. Here's what we tested:

  • Test 1: ChatGPT Sample 1
  • Test 2: ChatGPT Sample 2
  • Test 3: Gemini Sample 1
  • Test 4: Gemini Sample 2
  • Test 5: Claude Sample 1
  • Test 6: Claude Sample 2

Each one was humanized by both Undetectable AI and Surfer SEO, then run through TruthScan.

We used 30% as the pass threshold, the same benchmark most SEO agencies apply. Any sample scoring below that is considered safe to publish.

Anything above means TruthScan still read it as AI.

My Final Thoughts

Surfer SEO passed three out of six tests and averaged 29.5%, right at the edge of what most SEO agencies consider publishable.

Undetectable AI didn't clear the 30% threshold once, averaging 70.5% across the board and peaking at 82% on the Gemini sample. On free tools alone, Surfer takes this one.

That said, it's worth putting the result in context. Undetectable AI's free tier isn't its best foot forward. The paid "Undetectable" model, starting at $9.99 a month, is purpose-built for bypassing advanced detectors like TruthScan and is the version the tool is actually known for.

For SEO writers running high volumes of AI content, that's a relatively low entry cost for a tool with 23 million users.

Surfer's win here also comes with caveats. Three out of six isn't a pass rate you can build a content operation around, and the Claude samples at 44% and 48% show a clear weak spot.

The humanizer is also a bolt-on feature inside a platform that starts at $99 a month, which is a significant investment if bypassing detection is your primary goal.

For SEO writers already inside Surfer, the humanizer is a convenient first pass and it outperformed expectations in this test.

But if reliable detection bypass across all major LLMs is what you're after, Undetectable AI's paid model is the version worth putting to the test next.
