OpenAI, the organization behind some of the most advanced artificial intelligence models, had previously introduced an experimental update to their DALL·E model to a select group of Labs users back in March.
Today, several months after its introduction, users are met with an "Engine not found" notification when trying to access this experimental model, indicating that it's been removed.
DALL·E 2, known for its ability to generate impressive visual content based on textual prompts, had its roots set over a year ago. Since then, the feedback from the user community has been instrumental in shaping the model's development.
This experimental model was part of what seemed to be the next phase in DALL·E's evolution, offering sharper image quality and a higher degree of photorealism, especially for facial features. While Midjourney still strides way ahead anything DALL-E 2 ever was, the experimental model was the closest I've seen to catching up.
The experimental model was initially offered to users with the understanding that it would be available for around 10 days while feedback was gathered. However, it seems OpenAI extended its duration, allowing users to play around with it for a few more months.
As of now, it's unclear why the model remained accessible for longer than initially communicated, and OpenAI hasn’t provided official details on the reason behind its removal.
The email sent out in March had also highlighted that the prompting system in this experimental version was different from DALL·E 2, granting users unlimited credits to foster exploration. Now, with its removal, many are left wondering what the future holds for DALL·E.
There's growing speculation within the AI community about the possibility of a DALL·E 3. The enhancements hinted in the experimental model might be indicative of what's to come in a subsequent version of DALL·E.
OpenAI's history of iterative development and commitment to improving its models based on community feedback strengthens the argument for a DALL·E 3. But as always, without official confirmation, it's just speculation.
For now, users and enthusiasts can only wait to see what the next move will be for the DALL·E team. The advancements made in the experimental model were promising, setting high expectations for the next iteration of this transformative visual AI.
